Meet the Team

Jacqueline Ward-Brew
Founder/President
Akwaaba (translation "Welcome" in the Ghanaian language of Twi),
I was born in Suhum, Ghana, West Africa, and immigrated to the United States at the age of 5 years old. Over the years, I visited Ghana often. It was on one of my visits in 2016 that the dream of opening a school in Ghana was placed in my heart. In New York, I taught elementary school children for 11 years, and have been an Assistant Principal for the last three years. I have a deep-seated passion for education and the hope that it brings to the future of all children.
My particular mission and vision of Abura Kids International Inc. is to give the children of Suhum, Ghana access to a good quality, early-childhood education. I believe that non-profit work is humanitarian work, and is necessary to meet the needs of people in need which other sectors are unable to achieve. In addition to building a school, as an extension of service to the community, my blue-sky goal is to engage in other community development projects such as access to clean water, healthcare, and electricity.
All of my New York students can unanimously say that my hero is George Washington Carver, and his quote, “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom” is one of my favorites. Another favorite African-origin quote is, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. Both quotes are the tenets on which I founded Abura Kids International, Inc. and are the core and philosophy of the organization.
In my spare time my hobbies include creating educational resources, and working on my soon-to-be-published series of children's books.
